“I had the urge to examine my life in another culture and move beyond what I knew.”
Frances Mayes, Under The Tuscan Sun
This nation has a long history and is often considered a pillar of Western Civilization. It was the birthplace of the Roman Empire and, since the year 312 CE, it has been the heart of the Catholic Church. The Renaissance was a landmark in art history, and Italy was the center, housing masterminds like Michelangelo and Brunelleschi, among others. Great explorers, like Christopher Columbus and Amerigo Vespucci, also came from Italy. During the Baroque era, Italy gave birth to scientists like Galileo Galilei, who changed our perceptions of the world. Throughout the centuries, this nation has been a vibrant place for arts, from painting to architecture and opera, which originated here.
Italian cuisine is known for its regional diversity, especially between the north and the south of the peninsula. It's generally characterized by its simplicity, with many dishes having only two to four main ingredients. Staples such as wine, cheese and pasta are almost always important part of meals
Roman menus lean heavily to meat, vegetables and pasta, and also includes a lot of fried foods. While the agricultural Tuscany region is known for some of Italy's finest olive oils, sheep's milk cheeses, and beef dishes. Bread, baked in giant, salt-free loaves, is king in this region, and locals incorporate it into numerous salads and soups.
For Italians though, food isn't just nourishment, it is life. Family gatherings are frequent and often centered around food with the extended networks of families.
Ten years ago I travelled with Balance Bound on my first European vacation and oh what an experience; biking through French vineyards,
staying on a snail farm, exploring the small towns along the Mediterranean. So, when a few girlfriends said they wanted to go to Italy,
I knew we needed BB to plan the adventure.
Balance Bound delivered in high fashion. We were met at the airport, guided through connecting transportation and excursions.
We didn’t have to think about where we were going, or where to sleep; all the important details were taken care of for us.
Even great restaurant options had been picked out ahead of time so we didn’t have to spend our time doing research on
where to eat. If we wanted, all we had to do was decide what type of wine to drink. Everything far surpassed our expectations.
Ten years is too long between amazing cultural travel experiences. We're already planning our next journey together, in two years!
